Under what circumstances should a crane drum be scrapped?

The crane drum is a critical load-bearing component of the hoisting mechanism, primarily used to wind the wire

rope and transmit the lifting force. If the drum suffers severe wear, deformation, or structural damage,

it will not only affect the proper arrangement and service life of the wire rope but may also lead to safety incidents

such as rope breakage, rope jamming, or loss of control of the load. Therefore, during daily operation and maintenance,

the condition of the drum must be inspected regularly. If it is found to have reached the end of its service life,

it should be replaced promptly; operating the crane with a defective drum is strictly prohibited.

Visible wear, dents, or scratches on the drum surface or rope grooves can cause uneven stress distribution

in the wire rope, increasing the risk of wire breakage and rope failure.

If cracks, fissures, or localized damage appear on the surface or inside the drum, structural strength

will be compromised, posing a risk of sudden failure.

3. Visible deformation
Deformations such as bending or twisting of the drum can affect the arrangement of the wire rope,

leading to tangling, jamming, and abnormal wear.

4. Severe corrosion
Rust, corrosion spots, or pitting on the surface of the drum can reduce the material’s strength

and compromise safety during normal use.

5. Fatigue Damage
If fatigue cracks or other signs of fatigue damage appear after prolonged use, the damage may continue

to propagate, ultimately leading to drum failure.
