Overview of Drum Group Knowledge

What is a drum group?

Answer: The drum is the component in the hoisting mechanism used for winding the wire rope.

What parts does the drum consist of?

The drum consists of components such as the drum shaft, flanged internal gear ring, drum hub, bearings, and bearing housings. When one end of the drum shaft is equipped with a switch for the rotary-type upper-limit position limiter, it must be ensured that the drum shaft rotates synchronously with the rotating shaft of the upper-limit switch.

What are the safety requirements for the drum group?

  1. When the load-handling device is at the upper limit position, the wire rope should be fully wound in the spiral grooves; when the load-handling device is at the lower limit position, there should be 1.5 loops of grooves for fixing the wire rope and more than 2 loops of safety grooves at each fixed end.
  2. The operating condition of the drum group should be regularly inspected, and any problems found should be promptly addressed.
  3. The deviation angle between the drum and the wire rope paying off should not exceed 3.5 degrees for single-layer winding mechanisms, and should not exceed 2 degrees for multi-layer winding mechanisms.
  4. For drums using multi-layer winding, the end should have a flange. The flange should be higher than the outer layer of wire rope or chain by twice the diameter of the wire rope or the width of the chain. Single-layer winding single drums should also meet the above requirements.
  5. All parts of the drum group should be complete, and the drum should rotate flexibly without any sticking or abnormal noise.

On lifting machinery, the drum group plays a very important role. As a component that, together with the hook block, forms the lifting system through wire rope reeving, without the drum group, the lifting machinery would not be able to properly complete the hoisting and lifting of heavy loads. Therefore, a high-quality drum group is extremely important for lifting machinery.

Attentive users may have noticed that the drum groups produced by our company are all equipped with spiral grooves. So what is the function of these spiral grooves? What role do they play in the operation of the drum group?

The spiral grooves on the drum group serve three purposes: first, they are necessary for operation, allowing the wire rope to wind coil by coil in the order of the spiral grooves without tangling, ensuring stable hoisting speed and improving hoisting performance;

Second, they increase the contact area between the wire rope and the drum group, reduce the stress at the contact points, decrease wear on both the wire rope and the drum group, and extend the service life of both;

Third, they make the installation and disassembly of the drum group more convenient, making the use of the drum group easier.

It can be seen that the spiral grooves are quite important for the drum group. High-quality spiral grooves can fully enhance the performance and functionality of the drum group, and can also ensure a longer service life for the drum group, preventing damage to it.
